Loading... Please wait...Medallion Commemerating Joseph Simon Gallieni, who was born on the 24/4/1849 in St. Beatus and died on the 27/05/1916 in Versailles, Gallaeni was the French military and colonial administrator overseeing French settlement activities.
Having retired from the military stating poor health he was recalled in April 1914 at the beginning of the First World War and was appointed as the military governor of Paris on the 26/08/1914 to help defend Paris.
As the Germans advanced Gallieni put Paris in a state of defence and reassured the Parisians they would fight "to the end!
He was attributed with the victory at Marne in September 1914, by sending reinforcements to the Sixth Army by commandeering taxis to ferry the troops to where they were needed most in Paris.
